Street Maintenance Worker


Job Overview
Works as part of a team to maintain and repair public works infrastructure, including streets and street right of ways, streetlights and signs, storm drainage systems and other city facilities. Will work in conjunction with sewer and water department when they require extra manpower. Operates a variety of construction equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance, and repair activities; performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks related to public streets, lands or buildings.

Normal duties
•    Ensures City streets are maintained and clear of debris or snow
•    Performs street repair and maintenance such as patching and filling potholes
•    Helps create a safe and efficient street system by placing or maintaining street signs, signals, striping, painting or other control mechanisms.
•    Assists with construction projects such as storm sewer, alley, parking lot, or minor facility construction projects.
•     Plants, trims and/or removes trees or other landscaping within the right of way or at other public facilities.
•     Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies. Operates a variety of construction or power equipment, such as mechanized brooms, backhoes, dump trucks, snowplows, end-loader, jackhammers, mowers, and other small equipment and tools to maintain street and utility systems
•     Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisors; cleans equipment
•    Assists with brush and leaf pickup program and clears storm-related debris
•    Will receive after-hours call-ins to perform a variety of tasks such as snow plowing, water main breaks, and sewer backups

Employees must be able to frequently lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Minimum  Requirements
High School Degree, or GED equivalent. Related work experience of 6 months or more, or. Any equivalent combination of education and experience.  Valid Illinois class B CDL with air brake endorsements will require a tanker endorsement after 6 months of work
