POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: WastewaterOperator
Department: Public Works
Reporting to: Wastewater Superintendent
FLSA Status: hourly employee Over time eligible
Hiring Range: $46,459 - $62,140 DOQ
General Purpose: The Wastewater Operator is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment facilities and related systems. This includes ensuring compliance with safety standards, monitoring equipment, conducting lab tests, and maintaining plant efficiency.
Essential Duties:
• Monitor and maintain equipment, perform repairs, and ensure proper operation of the wastewater treatment plant.
• Collect wastewater samples and test for chemical, biological, and physical properties.
• Maintain accurate records and prepare reports on plant performance.
• Operate and repair a variety of machinery including pumps, filters, gauges, and control panels.
• Respond to emergency situations, provide customer communication about service interruptions, and assist other departments as needed.
• Ensure safety procedures are followed, including the handling of hazardous materials and chemicals.
• Perform routine inspections and maintenance of tools and equipment.
• Operate heavy machinery such as backhoes, dump trucks, and bobcats for plant upkeep and repairs.
Supervision:
• Works under the general supervision of the Wastewater Superintendent
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED with two years of post-secondary training in a related field (biology, environmental science, etc.), or equivalent experience.
• Two years of experience in a water utility or wastewater treatment environment is preferred.
• Valid State Class B CDL, Illinois Class B Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification.
• Ability to work in physically demanding and hazardous environments, with knowledge of safety and regulatory requirements.
