Starting Salary: $54,947 to $56,732 DOQ

The City of Sandwich is seeking a qualified and dependable Water Plant Operator to join our team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities, along with the flexibility to adapt to changing daily workflows in a dynamic environment.


This position is responsible for supporting the safe and efficient operation of the municipal water system. Duties are varied and may change from day to day, requiring a proactive and detail-oriented approach. The Water Plant Operator reports directly to the Water Superintendent.


Key Responsibilities:
● Perform daily water plant operations and maintenance
● Collect water samples and conduct laboratory testing
● Maintain accurate records, logs, and operational data
● Operate and maintain a variety of equipment, including fire hydrants, handheld meter-reading devices, buffalo box keys, and other tools
● Read water meters and complete route inspections using physical registers
● Perform utility locating services (J.U.L.I.E.)
● Inspect, repair, and replace water meters in residential settings
● Conduct filter backwashing and other treatment processes
● Assist with water system repairs and infrastructure maintenance
● Respond to emergency situations and communicate service interruptions to the public
● Provide support to other departments as directed
● Notify residents of water-related updates and service information
● Accurately document all work performed
● All other duties as assigned


This role requires a hands-on individual who is comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, with a commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and service for the community.

 

Supervision
- Works under the general supervision of the Water Superintendent


Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED with two years of post-secondary training in a related field (biology, environmental science, etc.), or equivalent experience. 


Preferred Credentials
- Certified Illinois Water Operator License, class B preferred.
