The Engineering Department works together with several city departments. The City of Sandwich currently has multiple exciting projects that are underway or completed to enhance the city. These projects help support various needs of residents such as infrastructure improvements, maintenance, safety, and other needs that make Sandwich a great place to live!
Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion
The Engineering Department and Wastewater Departments have partnered together to improve the current city wastewater treatment plan to meet Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) guidelines. When the IEPA lowered phosphorus discharges from sewer plants state-wide, Sandwich was required to make improvements for discharge into a nearby creek to meet those requirements. That effluent change deadline is December 2024 while a lower limit must be achieved by 2030.
The city must meet IEPA deadlines on April 30th and June 30th to qualify for an IEPA low-interest rate loan estimated at 1.35 percent.
Sidewalk Repairs and Enhancements
The Engineering Department and Streets Departments are working with a local concrete vendor to improve several sections of sidewalk throughout the city to repair issues and ensure they meet ADA requirements.
Street Paving Enhancements
The Engineering Department and Streets Departments are working along with an asphalt company to improve and repave several streets within town as part of the city's comprehensive rotational streets improvement plan.
Latham Street Improvement Project
The Engineering Department and Streets Departments are working together with an outside contractor to make infrastructure improvements on Latham Street from the railroad north to the edge of the city. This project includes replacing outdated and aging infrastructure with new water and sewer lines as well as paving and grading. The project is expected to be complete before the Sandwich Fair.
During construction, Latham Street will be open to northbound traffic only starting at Center Street through Pratt Road. Residents will have access to their homes, but all southbound traffic on Latham Street will be closed during the construction and required to follow posted detours.
